How garages see your job

Add your registration and postcode, then pick the job from our list or describe it. It’s free to post, and you create a free account as you post. Garages on Matchanic can see your job: each garage’s Dashboard lists open jobs within its chosen distance of its own postcode, and garages whose distance covers yours may be emailed about it. Each garage decides whether to quote and what to charge, so we can’t promise how many quotes you’ll get, or how soon. You can message a garage about its quote, and nothing is agreed until you accept one. You pay the garage directly.

Each garage sets how far from its postcode it looks for jobs, and until it changes that, it’s 10 miles. So a garage in a neighbouring town may see your job too. Garages can also search for jobs around any postcode, on a list or a map. That’s why the postcode matters: use the one where the car actually is, which may not be your home.

Surrey postcodes don’t stop at the county line

Most of Surrey has GU, KT, RH, TW, CR or SM postcodes, but those areas also reach into Hampshire, Berkshire, West Sussex and London. So a postcode can look like Surrey’s when the place isn’t, and the other way round. For example:

• GU10, a Farnham postcode, also covers Bentley and Crondall, which are in Hampshire.
• GU17 addresses say Camberley, but the district covers Blackwater and Hawley, which are in Hampshire.
• GU26, for Hindhead, includes Grayshott in Hampshire.
• GU27, for Haslemere, includes Fernhurst in West Sussex.
• RH6, for Horley, also covers Gatwick Airport, which is in West Sussex.
• TW19, a Staines-upon-Thames postcode, includes Wraysbury in Berkshire.
• Ash and Ash Vale are in Surrey, but their GU12 addresses have Aldershot, in Hampshire, as the post town.
• Along the London edge, districts such as KT4, SM2, CR3 and CR6 are shared with London boroughs.
• Staines-upon-Thames, Ashford, Sunbury-on-Thames and Shepperton were in Middlesex until 1965, when they moved to Surrey. Middlesex stayed on as their postal county, so you may still see it in addresses there.

None of this changes who can see your job. Garages on Matchanic measure the distance to your postcode, not the county it’s in, so give your full postcode when you post, not just the town.

Driving into London: the ULEZ

Several parts of Surrey border London, among them Epsom and Ewell, Banstead, Staines-upon-Thames and Sunbury, Esher and Molesey, and Caterham and Warlingham. If you drive into London, the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) applies. According to Transport for London, the zone:

• covers all London boroughs, but not the M25;
• runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year except Christmas Day;
• charges £12.50 a day to drive in it if your car doesn’t meet its emissions standards.

Whether your car meets the standards depends on the car itself, so check its registration on TfL’s vehicle checker rather than going by its age. For exhaust, DPF or other emissions work, see Exhaust and emissions.
