Cookies

What Matchanic stores in your browser, and why.

Last updated: To add: Date this page was last updated

To add: This is a draft, written from what the site does today. Before launch, have your adviser confirm that everything listed here is strictly necessary, so that no cookie banner is needed.

In short

We only store what’s needed to sign you in and to remember a few things as you use the site, such as your last search on Find jobs or a reply you’ve started but not sent. We don’t use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t load scripts from other companies. Our fonts are served from our own site.

Cookies that sign you in

You only get these once you sign up, log in or ask for a password reset link. In each name, “<project>” stands for a code that identifies our database.

sb-<project>-auth-token

Set by
Supabase, our sign-in provider, on this site
What it’s for
Keeps you signed in as you move between pages. It holds your sign-in session, not your password. When it’s too long for one cookie, it’s split into parts ending .0, .1 and so on.
How long
Removed when you log out. Otherwise up to 400 days, renewed while you use the site.

sb-<project>-auth-token-code-verifier

Set by
Supabase, our sign-in provider, on this site
What it’s for
A one-off security code, set when you sign up or ask for a password reset link, so this browser can finish the request when you open the link we email you. Each request can also add a cookie whose name ends -flow-<request>-code-verifier, where “<request>” is a code for that request, and one ending -flows-code-verifier keeps a list of them.
How long
Removed when you log out. Otherwise up to 400 days.

Saved in your browser

These are kept in your browser’s own storage rather than in cookies. They stay on your device: they aren’t sent to us. In these names, “<garage>” stands for a code for your garage, “<account>” for a code for your account (or, if you run a garage, for that garage), and “<quote>” for a code for the quote a conversation is about.

mychanic:find-jobs:<garage>

Set by
Find jobs, a page for garages
What it’s for
Remembers your last search (postcode, distance, job types and car makes), so the page opens where you left it. Your browser may also hold an older copy named mychanic:find-jobs, saved by an earlier version of this page.
How long
Until you clear this site’s data in your browser.

mychanic:find-jobs-map

Set by
Find jobs, a page for garages
What it’s for
Remembers whether you showed or hid the map.
How long
Until you clear this site’s data in your browser.

mychanic:return-job

Set by
Dashboard and Find jobs, pages for garages
What it’s for
Remembers which job you opened from the list, so when you go back, the list opens at that job.
How long
Until you next open the Dashboard or Find jobs, and always when you close the tab.

mychanic:lastThread

Set by
Messages, a page for drivers and garages
What it’s for
Remembers which conversation you last opened, so your place in the list is kept when you go back to your messages.
How long
Until you close the tab, or sooner.

mychanic:draft:<account>:<quote>

Set by
Messages, a page for drivers and garages
What it’s for
Keeps a reply you’ve started but not sent, so it’s still in the box if you open another page and come back. It holds the words you’ve typed.
How long
Until you send the reply or clear the box, and always when you close the tab.

mychanic:flash

Set by
The sign-up and password reset pages
What it’s for
Shows a one-off note on the page you go to next: “Password updated. You’re logged in.” after a password reset, or “Your account is set up and you’re logged in.” after you sign up.
How long
Removed when you close the note or move on, and always when you close the tab.

admin-back:job, admin-back:garage

Set by
Matchanic’s admin pages, used only by people at Matchanic
What it’s for
Remembers which list or search someone at Matchanic came from, so Back returns to it.
How long
Until you close the tab.

Other sites your browser contacts

  • The maps garages use on Find jobs and on a job’s page load their images from OpenStreetMap’s servers, which receive your IP address. The OpenStreetMap Foundation’s privacy policy covers what they do with it.
  • When a postcode is entered, and when a garage looks at jobs on Find jobs or a job’s page, your browser looks postcodes up with postcodes.io, which receives the postcodes and your IP address.
  • Signing in, and reading or saving anything on the site, goes to our database provider, Supabase. Garage photos and certificates load from there too.

Our privacy notice lists every company that handles information for us.

Why there’s no cookie banner

Everything listed here either signs you in or remembers something you did on the site. None of it tracks you or is used for advertising, so we don’t ask for consent with a banner. If we ever want to add anything that isn’t needed for the site to work, we’ll ask for your consent first.

Clearing cookies and settings

Logging out removes the sign-in cookies. You can delete any of these at any time in your browser’s settings. If you delete the sign-in cookies, you’ll be logged out.
