What affects the price
Each garage sets its own price. These are the things that usually make the difference.
- Repair or replacement. A small chip can often be filled; a crack usually means a new windscreen.
- What’s built into the windscreen, such as sensors, heating or a camera, which may need setting up again after a new one is fitted.
- The size and place of a dent or scratch, and whether paint has to be matched and blended.
- New, second-hand or repaired panels and parts.
- How far rust has spread.
Windscreen damage and the MOT
The MOT tester checks the windscreen from the driver’s seat for damage more than 10 mm in diameter in zone A, a strip 290 mm wide in the area the wipers sweep, centred on the steering wheel, and more than 40 mm in diameter in the rest of the swept area.
Damage that affects the driver’s view of the road is a major defect, which fails the test. A repair finished flush with the glass, so it can barely be seen, doesn’t count as damage.
The Highway Code also says windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision.

What to tell the garage
For glass, say which window. For a windscreen chip, say how big it is and whether it’s in front of the driver, and whether the screen has a camera, sensors or heating, if you know.
For bodywork, say which panel and how big the damage is, and give the paint colour or paint code if you have it. The code is often on a sticker in a door frame or under the bonnet.
Questions about bodywork and glass
Can a windscreen chip be repaired?
Often, if it’s small, but it depends on its size, its type and where it is on the screen. A chip can spread into a crack, so it’s worth dealing with early. Post ‘Windscreen chip repair’; if a garage thinks the screen needs replacing, it can say so.
Will my insurance pay for the glass?
That depends on your policy, so check with your insurer before you accept a quote. It may have its own rules about who does the work.
Why might a new windscreen need calibrating?
A camera behind the windscreen, used for features such as lane keeping or automatic braking, may need setting up again once a new screen is fitted. Say if your car has one, and check whether each quote includes it.
