In a manual car the clutch connects the engine to the gearbox, and it wears with use. The gearbox, driveshafts and CV joints then carry the power to the wheels. Automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes have their own servicing and repair jobs on the list.

Signs your car may need this

  • The revs rise but the car doesn’t speed up to match: a slipping clutch.
  • A judder as you pull away.
  • A clutch pedal that feels heavy or spongy, or bites higher than it used to.
  • Grinding, or difficulty getting into gear.
  • A rattle at idle that changes when you press the clutch, which can be the flywheel.
  • A clicking from the front when you turn at low speed, which can point to a CV joint.
  • An automatic that changes gear harshly, slips, or shows a gearbox warning.

What affects the price

Each garage sets its own price. These are the things that usually make the difference.

  • Front-, rear- or four-wheel drive, and how much has to come apart to reach the clutch.
  • Whether the flywheel is replaced too. A dual mass flywheel is a bigger part than a solid one.
  • Manual, automatic or dual-clutch (DSG) gearbox.
  • Whether a gearbox is repaired, reconditioned or replaced.
  • Parts from the car’s maker or from other brands.
  • Whether the car can be driven to the garage.

What to tell the garage

Say whether the car is manual, automatic or dual-clutch, and describe the symptom: when it happens, in which gears, and whether it’s getting worse.

If a garage has told you the flywheel needs doing too, choose ‘Clutch kit and flywheel replacement’ or ‘Dual mass flywheel replacement’. For an automatic or dual-clutch gearbox, say when its oil was last changed, if you know.

Questions about clutches and gearboxes

  • What is a dual mass flywheel?

    A flywheel made in two parts with springs between them, fitted to many diesel and some petrol cars to smooth out engine vibration. It can wear, and it’s often checked when the clutch is replaced, so the list has it as a job of its own and as part of a clutch kit.

  • Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

    A slipping clutch usually gets worse, and in the end the car may not pull away at all. Get it looked at soon, and avoid long journeys and towing until it has been.

  • Do automatic gearboxes need servicing?

    Some makers set a schedule for changing automatic or dual-clutch gearbox oil; others say it’s filled for life. Your handbook or service schedule says which. ‘Automatic gearbox service’ and ‘DSG or dual-clutch gearbox service’ are both on the list.

  • What’s the clicking when I turn?

    A click or knock from the front when turning at low speed is a common sign of a worn CV joint. A split CV boot lets dirt in and grease out, so ‘CV boot replacement’ is worth doing before the joint itself wears.
