Electric and hybrid cars still need looking after: brakes, tyres, suspension, the cabin filter and, where fitted, coolant, and a hybrid has an engine to service too. The high-voltage battery and wiring need a technician trained to work on them safely.

Signs your car may need this

  • A service is due on the maker’s schedule or the car’s service reminder.
  • The car won’t charge, charges slowly, or the car or charge point reports a fault.
  • A warning about the high-voltage system, the hybrid system or the 12-volt battery.
  • Range noticeably lower than it used to be in similar conditions.
  • The car won’t switch on even though the main battery is charged, which can be the 12-volt battery.
  • The brakes feel different, or regenerative braking seems to have stopped working.

What affects the price

Each garage sets its own price. These are the things that usually make the difference.

  • Fully electric or hybrid. A hybrid has an engine to service as well.
  • Whether the work touches the high-voltage system, which needs trained technicians and the right equipment.
  • For a battery fault, whether part of the battery can be repaired or the whole battery needs replacing.
  • The car’s make and model, and the diagnostic equipment it needs.
  • Parts from the car’s maker or from other brands.

The MOT for electric cars

  • Electric cars need an MOT on the same timetable as petrol and diesel cars: the first by the third anniversary of registration, then every year. The only exemption GOV.UK lists specifically for electric vehicles is for goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2015.
  • The MOT’s exhaust emissions checks are for petrol and diesel engines, so they don’t apply to a fully electric car. The MOT inspection manual also says testers don’t need to measure a hybrid’s exhaust emissions; the rest of the test still applies.

What to tell the garage

Say whether the car is fully electric, a plug-in hybrid or a hybrid you don’t plug in, and give the mileage. For a charging fault, say whether it happens with every charger or only one, and what the car or charger shows.

Before you accept a quote, message the garage to ask about its training for high-voltage work. Garages add their own qualifications to their profiles, and Matchanic doesn’t check them.

  • Does an electric car need servicing?

    Yes. A fully electric car has no engine oil to change, but the brakes, tyres, suspension, cabin filter and, where fitted, coolant still need attention, and the maker sets a schedule. Choose ‘EV service’, or ‘Hybrid service’ for a hybrid.

  • Can any garage work on my EV?

    Work on the high-voltage system needs a technician trained for it. Message a garage about its quote to ask about its EV training before you accept, whatever the job.

  • What’s the 12-volt battery on an EV for?

    It powers the car’s electrics and wakes the car up, while the high-voltage battery drives the motor. If the car won’t switch on, the 12-volt battery is worth checking first. ‘12V battery replacement (EV or hybrid)’ is on the list, and the Car batteries page covers batteries more generally.

  • Can a garage check my EV’s battery health?

    You can post ‘EV health check’ or ‘Hybrid battery diagnosis’. What a check includes varies, so ask the garage what it will test and what it will give you afterwards.
