How Matchanic works

Describe the job once. Garages on Matchanic can quote for it, and you decide what happens next.

The steps

  1. Step 1

    Tell us about the car and the job

    Start with your registration and we’ll look the car up in DVLA and MOT records. If a detail isn’t found, you can type it in. Then choose the job from our list, or choose Other and describe the problem.

  2. Step 2

    Post it

    Add the postcode where the car is. Garages on Matchanic see it on your job, so they know how far away the car is, and garages within a set distance of it may also get an email about your job. You’ll need a free account to post, and you create it at the end.

  3. Step 3

    Garages choose whether to quote

    Garages on Matchanic can see your job. Each one decides whether to quote and what to charge. We email you when a quote arrives.

  4. Step 4

    Compare and choose

    Open the job from My jobs to see its quotes. Each shows the garage’s name and price, and can list what the price includes. Look at a garage’s profile, or message the garage if you have a question. When you’re ready, accept the quote you want. The others are declined, and we email the garage you chose.

  5. Step 5

    Arrange the work with the garage

    Arrange a time with the garage you chose, by message on Matchanic, or by phone if you gave your number. You pay the garage directly. Once the work is done, you can rate the garage from My jobs.

Questions drivers ask

  • Is it free?

    Yes. Posting a job and reading quotes costs nothing. If you accept a quote, you pay the garage for the work, not Matchanic.

  • How many quotes will I get?

    We can’t promise how many quotes you’ll get, or how soon. Each garage decides for itself whether to quote.

    Your job stays open to quotes until you accept one or we cancel it for you. If you no longer need the work, ask us to cancel the job through our contact page.

    A garage can price routine servicing in advance. If your servicing job matches its prices, a quote can be sent without the garage opening your job. That needs the car’s engine size from the lookup.

  • Do I have to accept a quote?

    No. You can ignore any quote. Nothing is accepted until you press Accept quote and then Confirm and accept. Once you accept a quote, it can’t be undone, and the other quotes on that job are declined.

  • What do garages see about me?

    Garages see your name, your car and your postcode. We never ask for your full address. Only garages that quote on your job can see your phone number, so they can call you about the work. Once you accept a quote, the other garages can no longer look up your number on Matchanic.

  • What if I don’t know what’s wrong?

    Choose Diagnostic for a warning light or a fault you can’t place, or choose Other and describe what the car is doing: a noise, a smell, a leak. Garages quote on what you tell them.

  • Can I change or cancel a job once it’s posted?

    You can’t change a posted job, and you can’t cancel it from your account. Until you accept a quote, we can cancel it for you: reply to an email we’ve sent you about the job, or ask through our contact page with the car’s registration if you gave one. If a detail is wrong, ask us to cancel the job, then post it again. Once you’ve accepted a quote, the job can’t be cancelled: speak to the garage.

  • How do I pay?

    You pay the garage directly, however you and the garage agree. Matchanic doesn’t take payment for the work. If the garage finds more work is needed, agree it and its price before it’s done.

  • What if something goes wrong with the work?

    Speak to the garage that did it. Matchanic doesn’t do repairs or offer a warranty, so the work and any guarantee on it are between you and the garage. You can rate the garage from My jobs. If you think a garage, a message from one or a review on its profile breaks our terms, tell us through our contact page.

  • Where is Matchanic available?

    Matchanic is launching in Surrey first. You can post a job with any full UK postcode our map can place. We’re just starting, so there may be few or no garages on Matchanic near the car yet, in Surrey or anywhere else. See Matchanic in Surrey for the towns and postcodes we’re starting with.
