Garages see a callout like any other job and choose whether to quote, so there’s no set response time. It isn’t a breakdown or emergency service.

If you’ve broken down somewhere unsafe

  • Call your breakdown provider, or 999 if anyone is in danger.
  • Matchanic doesn’t send anyone out. A callout job waits for garages to choose whether to quote.

When a callout job may suit

  • The car won’t start at home or at work, and you’d like it looked at there.
  • A wheel to change, with the spare or a new tyre.
  • A car that isn’t safe to drive to a garage.
  • A fault you’d like diagnosed where the car is.
  • A car that won’t move, which you want assessed before you decide what to do.

What affects the price

Each garage sets its own price. These are the things that usually make the difference.

  • How far a garage has to travel to reach the car.
  • What the job needs. A jump start or a wheel change is quicker than finding a fault.
  • Parts the garage has to bring, which it needs to know about in advance.
  • The day and time you need it.
  • Whether the work can be done where the car is, or the car has to go to a workshop in the end.

What to tell the garage

Give the postcode where the car is, not your home’s if they differ: garages see how far away the job is from it. Say what’s wrong, where the car is parked (a driveway, a car park, a street) and whether there’s room to work on it safely, and when you can be with the car.

For a car that won’t start, say what happens when you try. For a wheel change, say whether there’s a spare, and whether the locking wheel nut key is in the car.

Questions about mobile callouts

  • How quickly will someone come out?

    We can’t say. Garages see a callout like any other job and choose whether to quote, so there’s no set response time, and you may not get a quote. If you need help urgently, call your breakdown provider.

  • What does ‘Roadside assistance’ on the list mean?

    It’s a job garages can quote for, like the others. It isn’t a breakdown service, and Matchanic doesn’t send anyone. Use it to ask for help with a car where it is, and say what you need.

  • Do all garages on Matchanic come out to cars?

    No. A garage applying to join says whether it’s a workshop (you take the car to it), mobile (it goes to the car) or both, and that shows on its quotes and its profile. Each garage decides for itself whether to quote on a callout.

  • Could a garage from another town see my callout?

    Yes. Each garage sees open jobs within its chosen distance of its own postcode, and can search other areas on a map, so a garage in a neighbouring town may see yours. That’s why the postcode where the car is matters.
