Put the wrong fuel in? What to do first

  • If you notice before you set off, don’t start the engine.
  • If you notice while driving, stop when it’s safe and switch the engine off.
  • Then post ‘Wrong fuel drain (misfuel)’. If the car can’t be moved, say so, and where it is, under ‘Anything else’: garages choose whether to quote to come out to it. There’s no set response time, and Matchanic isn’t a breakdown or emergency service.

Signs your car may need this

  • A smell of fuel, or drips under the car. Get a fuel leak checked promptly.
  • The engine struggles to start, or cuts out.
  • Hesitation, misfiring or a loss of power as you accelerate.
  • A whine from near the fuel tank, which can be the fuel pump.
  • A fuel gauge that reads wrongly.
  • Fuel economy getting noticeably worse.

What affects the price

Each garage sets its own price. These are the things that usually make the difference.

  • Petrol or diesel, and the type of injection system, which decide the parts.
  • Where the fuel pump is. Many sit inside the tank.
  • For a misfuel: how much went in, whether the engine was started, and whether the car can get to a garage or a garage has to come out to it.
  • Whether injectors can be cleaned or need replacing.
  • Parts from the car’s maker or from other brands.

What to tell the garage

For a misfuel: which fuel went in, roughly how much, whether you started the engine or drove, and where the car is now. Use the postcode where the car is, not your home’s, if they differ.

For other faults: petrol or diesel, what the car does and when, any warning lights, and whether you can smell fuel.

Questions about fuel systems

  • I only put a little of the wrong fuel in. Does it need draining?

    Don’t guess. The safe course is not to start the engine and to ask a garage. Say how much went in, and how full the tank was, when you post.

  • Can a garage drain the fuel where the car is?

    Post ‘Wrong fuel drain (misfuel)’ with the postcode where the car is. Under ‘Anything else’, say that the car can’t be moved and where it’s parked, such as on a forecourt or at home. Garages choose whether to quote, including whether to come out to it, and there’s no set response time.

  • What does fuel injector cleaning do?

    It clears deposits that can build up and upset the spray of fuel into the engine, which can help with rough running. It won’t fix an injector that has failed: ‘Injector replacement’ is under Engine repairs.

  • My fuel gauge is wrong. Which job is that?

    Often the sender unit in the tank, so choose ‘Fuel sender unit replacement’. If you’re not sure, describe what the gauge does under ‘Anything else’.
