Signs a tyre needs attention

  • Tread close to the legal limit. Tyres have small raised bars in the main grooves: when the tread is level with them, it’s down to 1.6 mm.
  • Cuts, bulges or cracks in the sidewall.
  • A tyre that keeps losing pressure, or a tyre pressure (TPMS) warning light.
  • A nail or screw in the tread.
  • Vibration at speed, which can mean a wheel needs balancing.
  • Wear on one edge of the tread, which can point to the wheel alignment (see Steering and suspension) or the pressures.
  • Kerbed, cracked or corroded alloy wheels.

What affects the price

Each garage sets its own price. These are the things that usually make the difference.

  • The tyre size, printed on the sidewall.
  • The brand and type of tyre, and whether it’s a run-flat, winter or all-season tyre.
  • How many tyres: one, a pair or a set of four.
  • Whether fitting, balancing and a new valve are included. Check what each quote covers.
  • Tyre pressure sensors, if the car has them and one needs replacing.
  • A locking wheel nut with no key, which has to be removed first.

The legal tread depth

Cars must have a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference. The Highway Code also says tyres must be inflated to the maker’s specification for the load you’re carrying.

The MOT checks the tread against the same 1.6 mm limit.

What to tell the garage

Give the tyre size from the sidewall. It looks like 205/55 R16 91V (that’s the format, not the size your car needs). Say how many tyres you want, and whether you’d like a particular brand or type.

If the car has run-flat tyres, choose ‘Run-flat tyre replacement’. If the wheels have locking nuts, check the key is in the car; if it’s lost, choose ‘Locking wheel nut removal’. For a puncture, say where the damage is, because not every puncture can be repaired.

Questions about tyres and wheels

  • Can my puncture be repaired?

    It depends on where the damage is and how big it is. Damage to the sidewall, or near the edge of the tread, usually can’t be repaired, and a tyre that has been driven on while flat may be damaged inside. Post ‘Puncture repair’, say where the nail or damage is, and a garage can tell you if it needs a new tyre instead.

  • What’s the difference between balancing and alignment?

    Balancing adds small weights to a wheel so it spins evenly, and can cure a vibration at speed. Alignment (tracking) sets the angle of the wheels, and can stop the car pulling and the tyres wearing on one edge. Balancing is a tyre job; alignment is under Steering and suspension.

  • What does the tyre pressure warning light mean?

    On a car with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), it usually means a tyre is low, or a sensor has a fault. Check the pressures first. If the light stays on with the pressures right, post ‘Tyre pressure sensor (TPMS) replacement’, or the TPMS warning light job under Diagnostics.

  • Can a garage come to me to change a wheel?

    You can post ‘Wheel change’ as a mobile mechanic callout, and garages choose whether to quote to come out to the car. There’s no set response time, and it isn’t a breakdown or emergency service.
